Spotted hyenas are often perceived as the villains of the animal kingdom, thanks to cartoons (like "The Lion King") and traditional stereotypes. Their infamous reputation includes being cunning, cruel, and unsightly.
However, they are remarkably successful predators.
1. Spotted hyenas are not just scavengers; they are highly skilled hunters with a success rate even surpassing that of lions. They are intelligent, adept at pack coordination, and employ clever strategies for their hunts.
2. They possess immunity to many fatal viruses, meaning they can consume diseased animals without falling ill, which helps to curb the spread of disease.
3. Their jaws are among the most powerful of all mammals, capable of crushing bones with ease. Consequently, their droppings are rich in calcium, which many other animals consume for supplementary intake.
4. They communicate using 14 distinct vocalizations. Their well-known "laughter" is actually a signal to alert companions of danger.
Spotted hyenas are often described as "opportunists," adapting their feeding strategy based on the situation, whether it's hunting for themselves, stealing from others, or waiting for leftovers.
They will patiently wait their turn when lions are feeding, but if they encounter a lone lion, they will mob it, driving it away to claim the prey. Indeed, a significant portion of their diet is obtained by taking food from cheetahs or leopards.
While such behavior might seem morally reprehensible, it is an effective survival strategy within the natural order of competition and selection.
What are your thoughts on hyenas?

Hello everyone, I am Sunday Richard Kamangu, born in 1983 in Lukuledi, Tanzania. I've loved drawing since I was a child. For me, painting isn't a job; it's a joy. I cherish and delight in every moment of creating art.
Since 2005, I've been a professional artist in the Masasi region. I describe my style as "African Art Style" because I employ a unique combination of techniques. I prefer acrylic paints but also select other mediums depending on the nature of the artwork.
My favorite subjects are daily life and nature, which serve as my primary inspiration. I wish to convey that our culture is built on unity, happiness, mutual support, abundant natural resources, and a commitment to their conservation.
My dream is to become a renowned artist. However, before that, my greater mission is to encourage talented children and help them realize their aspirations. I paint with my heart and dedicate my life to art. Though some may not understand my dreams, this will not deter me.
Currently, I am pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts and Design degree at the University of Dodoma.
