Kyoto Unsōdō Woodblock Print Festival Postcard - Jidai Matsuri

Unsōdō was founded in the 24th year of the Meiji era as an art book publisher utilizing woodblock printing techniques. The company name was gifted by the literati painter Tomioka Tessai, inscribed with "Gei, Kaori aru kusa nari" (Gei, fragrant grass). "Geisō" itself refers to a perennial herbaceous plant of the Rutaceae family; its Chinese name is "Yúnxiāng," and it is a homophone of the simplified Chinese character "芸" for "yì." In the 7th year of the Taishō era, the Tokyo branch was established, engaging in the publication of color reference books and photograph collections for kimono accessories and craft patterns, as well as the production of woodblock prints for appreciation. Today, only a handful of woodblock printing publishers remain in Kyoto and Tokyo; among them, Unsōdō is Japan's sole publisher of hand-pulled woodblock prints and *watoji* (Japanese-style binding), and continues to produce reproductions of many works. ※ Due to differences in computer screen settings, the color of the product images may vary slightly.
