Her large, hazel-green eyes hold a hint of weariness as she skillfully works with henna paste tubes in the tent set up for our dinner excursion, adorning the hands of a continuous stream of guests with intricate Mehendi designs. I asked Neha to draw inspiration from the patterns on the scarf she wore to cover her nose and mouth. In less than five minutes, my left hand bore a flowing, ochre pattern of interconnected circles and leaf-vein networks. I cautiously asked if she had worn such adornments on her wedding day. Neha replied through her veil, "Yes, but it's a bit different from the more popular Indian Mehendi." Her family settled on this peninsula generations ago, seven generations to be exact, having migrated from Iran. Now, she travels to different locations with the changing seasons. Sometimes it's at tourist camps like this, in a quiet corner near the bonfire, waiting for well-fed foreigners to visit her stall.
