J. M. W. Turner (1775-1851)— a master of Romantic landscape painting, hailed as the "painter of light."

In 1666, scientist Isaac Newton discovered that sunlight, when refracted through a prism, could reveal a spectrum of colors, leading artists to understand that white light is composed of various colors. In 1801, the British scholar Thomas Young first studied human perception of color. He proposed that within the visible spectrum, selecting three primary colors of light with significant separation and combining them in different proportions could produce almost any color.
Turner incorporated his personal interpretations into his landscape paintings, making the depiction of light, air, and water his specialty. This personalized approach to landscape interpretation subsequently influenced Claude Monet, the "father of Impressionism," leading to the creation of his masterpiece, "Impression, Sunrise." Turner's art not only redefined landscape painting but also laid a crucial foundation for the development of Post-Impressionism.

Turner's talent was recognized early in the art world, affording him the financial means to express his unique style. David Piper, in "The Illustrated History of Art," referred to his later works as "wondrous enigmas." Critic John Ruskin described him as someone who could "terribly and truthfully grasp the pulse of nature."
Turner was drawn to depicting natural phenomena and disasters: fires, shipwrecks, sunlight, storms, heavy rain, and fog. He was captivated by the power of the sea. While he included figures, they served merely to accentuate the sublime and wild grandeur of nature, which humans could not conquer, as a testament to divine power. Consequently, in his later works, he focused on capturing the play of light on water, the sky, and flames, gradually moving away from literal representation and paving the way for Impressionist theories.
His early works employed more traditional techniques, but in his later period, he applied watercolor techniques to oil painting, capturing the fleeting effects of light and atmosphere. It is said he once had himself tied to the mast of a ship in a storm to experience the intensity of a tempest firsthand.
In his later years, he rendered his oil paintings with greater transparency, using light glazes to express the effects of pure light. In "Rain, Steam and Speed – The Great Western Railway," the outlines of objects are almost indistinguishable, with tense colors and fleeting light and shadow. This not only placed Turner at the forefront of British painters but also greatly influenced later French Impressionist painters, with Monet, in particular, studying his techniques meticulously. In 1816 (the Year Without a Summer), sunsets were exceptionally brilliant, and some of his works were inspired by these celestial displays.
