Kadomatsu is a rope woven from straw, traditionally hung on shrine torii gates to signify the separation between the divine and the human. When hung at the entrance or within homes during the New Year, it symbolizes warding off evil and inviting good luck. It is also used in the vicinity of celebratory events, or even placed in cars, all carrying a meaning of auspiciousness.
