Riso Postcard - It's a Long Story

Late Winter New Arrival Late in 2021, during a sudden gap in my usual routine, I finally watched "It's a Long Story," a title that had been on my watchlist for ages. It made me laugh and feel angry all at once. The story perfectly captures the witty, banter-filled life of the protagonist, Mitsuru. As the narrative unfolds and secrets are revealed, you find yourself thinking, "Perhaps I'm already enough as I am," or "I'm just waiting for that one sentence, a word that will push me forward." The plot revolves around the challenges faced by the people closest to Mitsuru: his mother, sister, brother-in-law, and niece. Despite being unemployed and living at home for six years, which outsiders might label as mooching off his parents, Mitsuru refuses to be defeated, even stating, "Being able to be supported by my parents is my talent." Mitsuru is that kind of person, someone who can always say what others want to hear, inspiring them to change, yet he himself struggles to move forward. This winter, I chose this series as a way to mark and commemorate this period. The drama focuses on everyday family life: the places they go, the food they eat, the conversations they have. Every detail within the series is ordinary, yet these ordinary moments are enough to change the trajectory of those who felt stuck. Everyone takes a step forward within Mitsuru's "witty, banter-filled life." Encountering this series when I felt stagnant left me with some of its memorable lines. I'm trying to find something that sparks a little change in myself. Everything can happen slowly; it's enough to start with what you can do. It's okay not to have a clear direction; just keep moving forward. There's no need to explain yourself to others; what matters is your own understanding. "The person who completes their life's journey in the shortest time and distance will not find interesting fruits along the roadside." "Why not try starting with something you don't dislike?" "Don't lose to yourself. Hold your head high and be confident." Remembering these words well is enough.
