About Ash Firing "Ash firing" is a traditional kiln firing method, heated to over 1200 degrees Celsius using firewood. It features "fire marks" naturally left by the direct flames on the ceramic body, and the ash naturally falling from the burning wood, giving the works a warm, rich, and varied color that electric or gas kilns cannot achieve. Compared to regular electric and gas kilns, the entire ash-firing process—from loading the kiln, ignition, sealing the kiln, to cooling—takes approximately 8-10 days. Furthermore, the intense kiln pressure, along with factors like climate humidity, wood dryness, human speed of wood addition, and kiln loading position, can all impact the success or failure of a piece, leading to a higher damage rate. Experienced ash-firing artists consider the kiln's airflow speed when loading. They plan the placement of works of different sizes, estimate the rising fire path, determine the timing and amount of wood and charcoal to add, and control the firing temperature.
