This is a ritual implement from the "Tōmitsu" (Japanese Esoteric Buddhism) school of Japanese Buddhism, crafted approximately between the 18th and 19th centuries. The common four-ringed pattern in the middle section symbolizes the four eyes of Dainichi Nyorai (Mahāvairocana Buddha)— capable of subduing internal and external obstacles, and protecting practitioners as they advance with right mindfulness. Includes a lanyard adorned with ancient West Asian carnelian beads and two 18th-19th century Burmese prayer beads.
