The Peyote cactus (Scientific name: Lophophora williamsii), also known as "Wuu Yu Yu" or Williams' Cactus, is commonly referred to as a spineless cactus. It is a small, spineless cactus native to the Americas, belonging to the Cactaceae family. The Peyote cactus has a somewhat spherical appearance, but its surface is covered in green or brown filamentous trichomes, giving it a very soft look. These trichomes help the plant absorb moisture and nutrients, while also protecting it from damage, contributing to its widely appreciated cute and fuzzy appearance. Peyote and its relative, Turbinicarpus lophophora (often referred to as Silver Crown Jade in Taiwan), contain psychoactive alkaloids such as mescaline, which can induce hallucinations. Indigenous peoples of the Americas have used the Lophophora genus for ritualistic and medicinal purposes for centuries. However, excessive consumption can be life-threatening, so it should never be eaten! Please also keep it away from pets! It typically takes 6 to 10 years for these plants to mature and bloom from seedling stage. All Lophophora species grow extremely slowly. As the taproot is prone to rot, a highly draining potting mix is essential, and the plant should be placed in a partially shaded environment. Avoid overwatering to maintain a compact form; overwatering can often lead to cracking or rot. Especially during winter, it should be kept completely dry, cool, and well-ventilated. | Care | The Peyote cactus is a very low-maintenance plant. It can adapt to various environments and requires minimal sunlight and water. Typically, watering once a week is sufficient, but the frequency may need to be increased during hot summers or dry climates. This cactus is also quite cold-tolerant and can grow in low temperatures, but requires extra protection when temperatures drop significantly. | Blooming | Peyote cacti produce beautiful flowers, usually blooming in spring or summer, typically between March and May, and sometimes extending into September. The flowers are a delicate lavender or pale pink, very elegant. However, the blooming period for this cactus is not long, lasting only a few days to a week. After the flowering period, the blossoms will fade.
