After finding fresh dung, they form it into spherical balls and use the sun or the Milky Way to navigate the shortest path back to their burrows. A Bunun legend tells of a dung beetle that hid dung balls in different caves, and after fifteen days, a primordial man and woman were born. It is said that the protagonist was the Taiwan dung beetle, the largest species of its kind, known as "niu shi gui" (literally "cow dung beetle") – a dweller species.
