We often get asked, "How is 《freehand embroidery》 different from regular machine embroidery?" Standard machine embroidery involves a machine reading an embroidery pattern and executing it automatically, resulting in perfectly uniform and identical designs. In contrast, 《freehand embroidery》 is a craft where an artisan skillfully guides the fabric to create the embroidery pattern. Because it's human-made, each piece possesses a unique character. No two embroidered designs are exactly alike, and the finished embroidery has a texture that closely resembles hand-stitching. The process involves transferring a sketch onto the fabric and meticulously following the needle's up-and-down motion while referencing the original design—a truly remarkable skill that's impressive even to imagine. Currently, there are only about 400 people in Vietnam who can perform freehand embroidery. Of these, only about 50 work professionally. Furthermore, a mere 30 have passed the highest level (Level 4) of embroidery certification. Among them, only 10 possess the skill to create the intricate designs required by Pangandaran. However, exceptional skill alone isn't enough; embroidery also requires artistic sensibility. Subtle nuances can significantly alter the overall impression. For this reason, we entrust our embroidery to the highly skilled artisan, Hun. Hun, now 46, has been practicing this craft since the age of 15, making him a veteran of 31 years. Moreover, his artistic flair is truly exceptional. We have complete faith in his abilities. Due to recent economic development, traditional craft industries in Vietnam, like elsewhere, face challenging circumstances. Since 2000, the number of people capable of freehand embroidery has been rapidly declining, and there are virtually no young people learning this skill today. As the number of artisans is expected to decrease further, the future of freehand embroidery in Vietnam hangs precariously in the balance, potentially disappearing within the next decade or so.
