Gold-filled items are regulated by the government, so these marks cannot be arbitrarily engraved. Therefore, these items are significantly better than gold-plated. Gold-filled jewelry is made with a base metal core, filled with other alloys like rhodium (a member of the platinum family), brass, and sterling silver. Because the outer surface of most gold-filled jewelry is solid gold, many vintage gold-filled pieces are yellow. However, rose gold or white gold filled jewelry can also be found. To be considered gold-filled, the gold content must be 5% of the total weight, or 1/20th of the total product weight (if it's 10KT, then 1/10th). In the jewelry industry, the item is made with a base metal (usually brass or copper) and then covered on both sides with a thick layer of gold (similar to how a sandwich is made). Unlike gold plating, the process used to create gold-filled jewelry involves thick gold sheets that are mechanically bonded using heat and high pressure, rather than electroplating. This bond is permanent, and the gold layer is much thicker than gold plating. It is not uncommon to find gold-filled jewelry that is fifty years old or older that looks almost new.
