Unso-do was founded in the 24th year of the Meiji era as a publisher specializing in art books using woodblock printing techniques. The name originated from a calligraphy gifted by the literati painter Tessai Tomioka, which read "Gei, a fragrant herb." "Unso" refers to perennial herbaceous plants of the Rutaceae family; in Chinese, it is "Rúxiāng," and it is a homophone for the simplified Chinese character "芸" (yún), which is also used in the name. In the 7th year of the Taisho era, the Tokyo store was established, engaging in the publication of reference books and photo collections for kimono accessories and craft patterns, as well as the creation of woodcut prints for appreciation. Today, only a handful of woodblock printing publishers remain in Kyoto and Tokyo.
