The Fading Art of 《Freehand Embroidery》
Most of Pangandaran's embroidery is created using 《freehand embroidery machines》.
You might often wonder, "How is 《freehand embroidery》 different from regular machine embroidery?" Standard machine embroidery is automated; the machine reads the design and stitches it automatically, resulting in perfectly uniform and identical pieces.
In contrast, 《freehand embroidery》 is a craft where the artisan manually moves the fabric to create the design.
Because it's made by human hands, each piece possesses a unique character. No two embroidered pieces are exactly alike, and the finished embroidery has a texture that closely resembles hand embroidery. It's an incredible artisanal skill that involves transferring an outline to the fabric and meticulously stitching while referring to the original artwork, all while controlling the up-and-down motion of the sewing machine needle.
Currently, there are only about 400 people in Vietnam who can operate a freehand embroidery machine. Of these, only 50 are able to do so professionally. Furthermore, just 30 have passed the highest embroidery certification level, Level 4. Among them, only 10 can execute the intricate designs of Pangandaran, which are known to be particularly challenging. However, being skilled alone isn't enough; embroidery also requires a keen sense of aesthetics. Even a slight nuance can significantly alter the overall impression.
For this reason, at Pangandaran, we entrust our work to Mr. Hun, who possesses the highest level of skill. Hun is currently 46 years old but has been embroidering since he was 15, making him a veteran of 31 years in this field. Moreover, he has an exceptional artistic sense, and we place our complete trust in him.
With Vietnam's economic development, traditional crafts, like elsewhere, face challenging circumstances. Since 2000, the number of people capable of freehand embroidery has been rapidly declining. While there used to be schools, now master artisans teach apprentices. Hun has trained four people so far, but he notes that there are no young people capable of this craft today.
Due to rapid economic growth, manual craftsmanship is being left behind, and the number of artisans is expected to decrease further. This trend is accelerating even faster than in Japan, and the national system offers little protection.
As a result, Vietnam's freehand embroidery is on the verge of disappearing within the next decade or so.
In this video, we had the privilege of having the highly skilled artisan Hun create the 'Sudden Rain' embroidery.
Please witness the beautiful embroidery come to life through his assured technique.
