Therefore, its survival is related to the health of the shallow mountain ecosystem. The current number in Taiwan is about 354 to 524. Farmland, settlements, riverbeds, and secondary forests near human settlements may be the areas where it infestes. Construction and development, chicken coop conflicts, illegal hunting, etc., all have negative impacts on them.

In 2002, scientists first discovered a small group of Chinese white dolphins in the shallow waters of the estuary in western Taiwan. The deep waters of the Taiwan Strait form a barrier, preventing Taiwan's ethnic groups from interacting with those in China's coastal areas. In 2015, it was renamed a new subspecies - the Taiwan white dolphin, becoming the only native marine mammal in Taiwan's waters. According to estimates by experts and scholars, the current number of white dolphins in Taiwan is less than 65.

It was originally the most widely distributed otter in the world, and it is also widely distributed near streams below 1,500 meters above sea level in Taiwan.
