Sofia works primarily in gouache and watercolor on paper in her studio in Stockholm. She explores how colors work together to enhance subjects in calming or seductive ways. “I often choose a color I don’t like as a starting point and combine it with other colors to keep the process interesting and active.” Sophia is educated in craft and design, and her artwork is full of patterns. She explains: "I have been working with patterns and pattern design for a long time. The mathematical and repetitive processes in pattern making suit me very well and I often try to incorporate patterns into my work." Sophia actually started out studying engineering, but after completing her exams, she knew it wasn’t the right career path for her. “I started studying at HDK School of Design and Crafts and it felt like coming home. "I did a lot of sketches but didn't let my performance anxiety get in the way. I told myself I would throw everything away and not show anyone. That's the best way to start a new project." However, this did not slow her down. Instead, Sofia throws herself into her work and finds inspiration in that drive. This helps her drive creativity in her work. “Painting techniques inspire me, but placing my work in context gives it meaning.” Engaging with art—whether creating her own or viewing the work of others—is a way for Sophia to socialize. It helps her gain perspective and understanding of the world around her. When asked how she likes to spend her free time, she mentioned a painting: "There's this painting by Monet called Breakfast in the Garden. That's how I always long to start my Sundays. A big breakfast in my garden. Preferably with family and friends."
