Leather produced using chrome tanning is softer than vegetable-tanned leather and shows less fading, discoloration, and shrinkage. This technique is known as chrome tanning. Leather processed and tanned using this method is simply referred to as "chrome-tanned cowhide." Today, chrome-tanned cowhide accounts for approximately 95% of the world's cowhide production for leather goods. Most commercially available leather bags, leather sofas, and leather accessories are made from chrome-tanned cowhide. The reason for its widespread use is its softer texture, which makes it easy to produce various leather items. The surface finishes for these leathers are also diverse, including patent leather, nubuck (crazy horse leather), oil wax leather, embossed leather, and more, all of which can be processed from chrome-tanned cowhide. https://www.dozi.com.tw/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/websiteimg-038.jpg The leather market doesn't raise cattle specifically for hides; cattle are primarily raised for meat or dairy products. Leather is merely a byproduct of the livestock industry. Therefore, farmers don't pay special attention to protecting the cattle's skin. As a result, cattle may suffer from insect bites, scratches, or punctures during their lives. Free-roaming cattle might also have branding marks. As they grow, their skin develops natural lines and wrinkles. In cases of difficult births for mother cows, there might be surgical closure marks. During the process of slaughtering for meat, there can also be knife marks from skinning. These marks are faithfully preserved on the leather when it's processed, serving as a testament to the animal's life. They often ask processing factories to sand the leather surface and then apply a coating, resulting in a clean surface but losing the natural character. At DOZI Leather Workshop, we generally do not avoid using these natural markings of the cowhide in our crafting, unless the area is excessively large. The resulting text will appear as a black, scorched mark. Therefore, this service cannot be used on dark-colored leathers such as black, dark blue, etc. ▴ Some products require laser engraving before production. For in-stock items that have already been made, laser engraving cannot be applied. Therefore, you will need to place a custom order, and we will arrange production accordingly. Please contact customer service to inquire about production times if you choose this service. 🌞 Care and Maintenance -------------------- Frequent use is the best form of maintenance. It is best to avoid storing leather in humid environments. If the leather accidentally gets wet during use, wipe it immediately with a dry cloth and let it air dry in a cool, well-ventilated area. Do not expose it to direct sunlight, as this can cause the leather to harden and deteriorate. After it has air-dried, you can apply leather conditioner to replenish the leather's oils. You can also spray a waterproof repellent on the leather surface to protect it from accidental spills and enhance surface protection. If you need to store the leather item or will not be using it for an extended period, place it in an electronic dehumidifying cabinet with humidity controlled between 50% and 60% to prevent mold. Alternatively, you can use a sealed bag with a desiccant packet for a similar effect. For repairs, a partial labor fee will be charged. 5. Our studio prefers to use natural leather materials. Cowhide is not excessively ground or coated with heavy surface finishes, so there may be slight variations in color, grain, and minor scratches. If you require a perfectly flawless surface, it may be difficult to meet this request, and we regret that we cannot accept orders solely based on the demand for a "flawless surface." Furthermore, once an item has been engraved or laser-carved, we do not accept returns unless there was a production error.
