This plant, commonly seen in Japan around springtime, has leaves that, upon closer inspection, are shaped like hearts. As the warm season arrives and the grasslands turn green, spotting shepherd's purse brings a sense of joy. It's a scene I've long wished to capture in a design. The name "pen-pen grass" comes from the sound it makes in Japan when rubbed between the palms of one's hands while shaking it – a soft "pen-pen" sound. As children, we often played, making this sound. The fabric is dyed with indigo using a traditional Indian block-printing technique called "dabu" printing, where a mud-like paste is used to prevent the dye from penetrating certain areas. This dress, while appearing like a common front-buttoned dress, features gathers at the shoulders, allowing for a generous use of fabric that still maintains a sleek silhouette. With no seams on the sleeves, this piece is recommended for those who are conscious of arm width or wish to layer clothing underneath. Additionally, the ribbon can be tied at the front, side, or back, or the dress can be worn loosely without the ribbon. Pockets are located on both sides. When worn by someone 156cm tall, the hem falls slightly above the calf. As each piece is hand-dyed by artisans, please understand that the color and pattern may vary from item to item. * Please note that there may be slight variations in weaving and dyeing, characteristic of handmade items. * As natural dyes are used and hand-dyed, the color will fade over time with use, developing a unique character. We recommend using a neutral detergent. * The garment may shrink slightly after washing.
