The birds in the image, from left to right, are: Taiwan Barwing / Varied Tit / Crested Serpent Eagle / Eastern Grass Owl / Taiwan Blue Magpie. Taiwan Barwing│ An elegant, long-tailed bird distinguished by a unique crest-like white supercilium. Its plumage is predominantly gray with darker wings and an orange underside. Typically found in mountain forests, they can descend to foothills and lowlands. Often observed in large flocks feeding on flowering or fruiting trees, otherwise they move in smaller groups. Their song includes a series of rapid whistles followed by a longer, more drawn-out melody. Varied Tit│ The Varied Tit is a small tit species endemic to Taiwan. It features a distinctive black and white head, gray wings, and a deep rusty-red breast and belly. It bears a strong resemblance to the Japanese Tit, but their distribution ranges do not overlap, and the Varied Tit lacks any white on its underside. They are gregarious and vocal, emitting sharp chirps when foraging in groups, and occasionally mixing with other species. They inhabit forests, parks, and gardens, primarily in foothills and mountainous areas. Crested Serpent Eagle│ A robust, medium-to-large brown raptor of forested habitats. It resides in mid-to-low elevation forests and is highly adapted to fragmented forests resulting from development. These eagles are not particularly wary of humans, often perching in conspicuous locations and tolerating human activity at a moderate distance. As suggested by its common name "Snake Eagle," its diet consists mainly of snakes and reptiles, though it also preys on other animals ranging from earthworms to large songbirds. Eastern Grass Owl│ A facial ring of yellowish-white stripes encircles its face, giving it a distinct heart shape, often likened to a monkey's face, hence its nickname "Monkey-faced Owl." Among the known owl species in Taiwan, it is the only one that does not primarily inhabit forests, preferring grassland habitats in low hills and scrublands. Taiwan Blue Magpie│ These birds are highly social, often moving in flocks of 3 to 12 individuals, typically composed of family members. They possess a fierce temperament and strong territoriality, aggressively attacking intruders and defending themselves collectively. A single flock may maintain the same territory for many years.
