Xiaoyi is a young Maria with moderate mental retardation. She usually takes care of the plants in the New Yuan group of Maria Technical Secondary School. Xiaoyi had a difficult delivery when she was born. Doctors used midwifery forceps, which caused damage to the cerebral cortex, resulting in delayed intellectual development and epilepsy. But her mother and grandmother never gave up on her and took her to learn pottery making and painting since she was a child, hoping that she could express her emotions through creation. Xiaoyi started learning to draw when she was very young, but she always drew in a standard way. It wasn’t until Maria’s art volunteer teacher Shuzhi began to understand Xiaoyi’s heart through chatting and guided her to paint from her imagination. Opening the teacher's notebook, it was filled with records of Xiaoyi's joys and worries. Xiaoyi's paintings began to show "Xiaoyi's style" and won recognition in many competitions. Moreover, her mood has become more stable. Xiaoyi, who used to be angry at every turn, now smiles all the time! "Everyone needs to be understood."
