🌿 Crazing refers to the phenomenon where, after ceramic firing, the glaze surface exhibits localized or overall shrinkage, resulting in irregular wrinkles, cracks, or textured patterns. This effect, arising from the differential shrinkage between the glaze and the clay body during firing or the unique properties of the glaze itself, creates a distinctive visual and tactile experience. It can be an intentional artistic expression or a result of unstable firing conditions.
🔍 Common Types of Crazing:
• Crawling Glaze
• The glaze cracks like a turtle shell, with exposed clay between the cracked glaze pieces.
• Causes: Uneven glazing, overly thick glaze layer, high glaze fluidity, or impurities (oil/water) in the clay.
• Orange Peel Texture
• The glaze surface shrinks minutely, appearing uneven like an orange peel.
• Causes: Uneven glaze particle size, varying melting points, or unusual firing atmosphere.
• Oil Spot or Metallic Glaze
• The glaze surface displays metallic spots, shimmering particles, and a slightly uneven texture.
• Typically found in iron-based or Tenmoku glaze systems. Crazing occurs due to the differing shrinkage rates between the ceramic glaze and the body material during the sintering process. The glaze melts at high temperatures to form the glazed surface, while the body material also shrinks during sintering. Because the glaze and the body material have different chemical compositions and melting points, they shrink at different rates during cooling, creating stress. When this stress exceeds the ceramic's capacity, crazing occurs.

🪴 Introduction to Tu Ching-He | Glaze Magician | Ceramic Artist
Master Tu Ching-He, born in Changhua in 1953, dedicated himself to the YIngge ceramic industry after completing his military service in 1975. He apprenticed under Master Lin Bao-Jia, the "Father of Taiwanese Ceramics," and further refined glaze formulations and application techniques with Japanese technicians. Driven by a "laboratory spirit" and a solid foundation in craftsmanship, he rose to become the factory director of a large kiln and received numerous national awards in the 1990s, including the Golden Ceramic Award and the Taipei Fine Arts Exhibition. Several of his works are held in the collection of the Yingge Ceramics Museum.
At the height of his creative career, Master Tu was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2000, leading him to temporarily step away from the ceramic world. However, his passion for clay eventually reignited his creative spirit. Despite the involuntary tremors in his hands due to his illness, he persisted in returning to the potter's wheel, transforming the rhythms of his life into the vibrant dance of his glazes. In 2016, he held a solo exhibition at the Ceramics Museum titled "The Trembling Fire of Life," his resilient creative spirit becoming a moving life symphony in the Taiwanese ceramic art scene.
▎Key Experiences
• Master's Legacy: Apprenticed under Master Lin Bao-Jia, deeply researching glazes and kiln firing. In the ceramic world, it is said: "Success depends on people, and porcelain success depends on fire."
* Glaze formulation is the "recipe."
* Kiln firing is the "key."
• Museum Recognition: His works "Blooming" and "Refining" are permanently collected by the New Taipei City Yingge Ceramics Museum.
• Major Exhibitions:
* 2007 | Selected for the 1st Taiwan Golden Teapot Award.
* 2013 | "Dialogue of Fire and Earth: Tu Ching-He Ceramic Solo Exhibition" held at the Chiayi City Cultural Affairs Bureau.
* 2014 | Invited to participate in the "Taiwan International Tea Bowl Festival," engaging in dialogue with international artists.
* 2016 | "The Trembling Fire of Life: Tu Ching-He Solo Exhibition" held at the Yingge Ceramics Museum.
* 2021 | "Song of Nature" Tea Ware Art Exhibition.
▎Artistic Characteristics
• Awakened Colors: Multi-layered kiln-transformed glazes
Master Tu is renowned as a "Glaze Magician" for his skillful application of multiple glazes layered upon each other. During high-temperature melting, the glazes interweave and flow, creating "glazed realms" as dazzling as nebulae or auroras. Post-illness, his works exhibit bolder, more unrestrained colors, with thick glaze layers conveying a powerful life force.
• Trembling Aesthetics: A Record of Touch and Warmth
Due to his physical condition, Master Tu's works do not pursue extreme symmetry and smoothness. Instead, they retain the natural traces of hand-molding, wheel-throwing, and bodily tremors. These marks, enveloped by thick glazes, transform into a unique "vital rhythm."
• Practice of Humanistic Zen:
Whether tea bowls or vases, his lines tend towards simplicity and rustic charm, embodying an aesthetic of "great wisdom appearing foolish." The Master firmly believes that an object truly completes its life as a work of art only through "use," through contact with human hands and mouths.
▎Creative Philosophy
"Glazing is the accumulation of life's cultivation, and kiln firing is the burning of life's fiery spirit."
For Master Tu Ching-He, creation is a struggle and reconciliation with the self. In the unpredictable high temperatures of the kiln, he savors the "surprise," viewing each kiln opening as the awakening of the glaze's life. With trembling hands, he pulls out the most stable essence of form, composing his own life's symphony in the flames.
▎Representative Work Categories
• Art Tea Bowls: Distinct, unrepeatable glaze layers, each bowl bottom hides a universe.
• Natural Glaze Vases: Bold textures and flowing glaze marks complement the eternal spirit between plants and vessels.

* Most products in this design hall are purely handmade. The glaze or ash deposit on each piece will vary, which is precisely the charm of ceramic art. As these are unique, handmade items, no two pieces will be identical. We appreciate your understanding. If you have specific needs, please contact the designer to see if a similar piece is available.
* Dimensions are measured manually and may have a slight error of 0.5 cm to 1 cm.
* Works may exhibit minor marks from the crafting process, as they are handmade or semi-handmade.
* During firing, natural phenomena such as mineral deposits or a slightly rough glaze texture may appear on or around the body due to glaze and ash, which is entirely normal. If you have any questions or wish to learn more about the product, please feel free to message the designer for assistance.
* Product colors are based on the actual item as it was photographed in a studio setting.
