We are often asked, "How is freehand embroidery machine embroidery different from regular machine embroidery?" In standard machine embroidery, the machine reads an embroidery pattern and stitches it automatically, resulting in perfectly uniform and identical designs every time. On the other hand, "freehand embroidery machine embroidery" is a craft where the artisan manually moves the fabric while stitching the design. Because it's created by human hands, each piece has its own unique character. No two embroidery designs are exactly alike, and the finished embroidery has a texture that resembles hand embroidery. It's an amazing craft that involves transferring a sketch to the fabric, referencing the original artwork, and stitching while coordinating the up-and-down motion of the sewing machine needle – just imagining it is impressive. Currently, there are only about 400 people in Vietnam who can perform freehand embroidery machine embroidery. Of those, only about 50 can do it professionally. Hun is currently 46 years old and has been embroidering since the age of 15, making him a veteran of 31 years in this field. Moreover, he has an exceptional sense of design. We place our complete trust in him. With Vietnam's recent economic development, the landscape for traditional crafts, like embroidery, has become challenging. Since 2000, the number of people capable of freehand embroidery machine embroidery has been rapidly declining. While there used to be schools for this craft, experienced artisans now take on apprentices to teach them. Hun has trained four apprentices so far, but he notes that there are no younger individuals capable of this craft nowadays. Due to rapid economic growth, manual labor is being left behind, and the number of artisans is expected to decrease further. This trend is happening even faster than in Japan, and as the national system doesn't offer much protection, Vietnamese freehand embroidery machine embroidery is facing a precarious future, potentially disappearing within the next decade or so.
