It can be used to record authentic history, imperial decrees, and the annals of ancient noble families. "Shiji" was published in 90 BCE, placing it 2,114 years before our present time. "Shiji" has its own history, a history that has been both criticized and cherished by many. For us today, the most significant difference from ancient times is perhaps freedom. Every book has its origin story. Although the content may differ greatly, the common thread is that it was born from an individual, at a specific moment, who felt compelled to pick up a pen and record their emotions and thoughts, accumulating over time. Such writings, regardless of whether they were penned by a famous person, hold their own significance and remain historical for those millions of years in the future. So, what do you wish to record? What do you want to tell future generations? To create a book that transcends time, what qualities must we possess? Driven by these thoughts, we created the "Shiji" and "Shouji" (手記) series. This is also how we differentiate between the larger and smaller formats. The A5 size, capable of holding more content in a grand manner, we named "Shiji." The B6 size, with comparatively less space for recording but much more portable, we named "Shouji." **Why Choose Handmade?** To imbue our products with the functionality to transcend time, we selected cowhide leather and meticulously applied edge paint to its borders and the edges of the paper. While machines offer convenience and efficiency, there are outcomes that machines simply cannot achieve. Based on past experiences and visits to various large factories, even thread-bound craftsmanship has its limitations. However, we do not seek speed; we desire to craft a product with care. Leather is a natural material, much like our skin. It may exhibit variations in texture, scratches, growth lines, and insect bite marks. We are committed to preserving the natural character of the leather without covering these natural markings with chemical coatings. 2. The color of natural leather may vary slightly under different lighting conditions. There can also be minor discrepancies between camera captures and computer monitor displays. We utilize high-quality Hasselblad cameras with accurate color reproduction to present the product's colors as closely as possible, minimizing color differences. 3. It is normal for leather to get scratched during use, similar to how we might accidentally scratch our skin. This is especially noticeable with vegetable-tanned leather. However, with prolonged use, or by gently rubbing with the oils from your fingers, these marks can fade or even disappear. This process is what allows the leather to develop a patina over time, becoming more storied, smooth, and lustrous. 4. Leather can be regularly maintained with leather conditioner. First, gently wipe away any dust with a soft cloth, then apply the conditioner. Allow the leather to absorb the oil, and then wipe off any excess with a clean, soft cloth. Using leather conditioner offers many benefits, including minimizing scratches, maintaining luster, and protecting the leather from moisture and mold. For leather products used long-term, we recommend regular conditioning with leather oil or frequent handling to keep the leather nourished with oils. 5. Leather should not be exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods, as this can cause the color to fade and, in severe cases, lead to cracking due to the evaporation of oils and moisture. 6. Leather should not come into frequent contact with water, as this can cause water stains, and dampness can lead to mold. If it accidentally gets wet, wipe it dry immediately. If you plan to be outdoors for extended periods with leather items, regularly apply leather conditioner to protect the material. **Tomoe River Paper Care Instructions** 1. Tomoe River Paper is a lightweight paper at 68 gsm. Papers below 70 gsm are considered thin and are more challenging to process than thicker papers, and they are also more susceptible to moisture. We make every effort to prevent moisture absorption during the processing stage. However, the paper may still change with environmental conditions and temperature. Therefore, slight, unnoticeable marks on the paper are normal and do not affect its usability. 2. Tomoe River Paper is suitable for writing with fountain pens, allowing the nib to glide smoothly without damaging expensive pen tips or tearing the paper. 3. While Tomoe River Paper can hold a certain amount of ink, excessive moisture will still cause damage. Under normal circumstances of drawing with fountain pens, it is perfectly fine. 4. Although Tomoe River Paper is thin, it has minimal ghosting. "Minimal ghosting" means that while you might faintly see the writing from the previous page, it does not interfere with writing on the current page. 5. For those who prefer using gel pens over fountain pens, it is advisable to write with a lighter touch to prevent indentations from transferring to the next page. 6. Tomoe River Paper exhibits excellent ink saturation and does not feather, making it an ideal choice for fountain pen enthusiasts.
