This coat is manufactured by James Bay Mfg. Inc. (also known as James Bay Coat & Blanket Corporation). James Bay is the southernmost part of Hudson Bay, home to the first Hudson's Bay trading post established in 1668. The company was founded in the 1960s and employed Indigenous people from the North to sew and apply appliqués onto the coats. This particular coat is inspired by traditional Inuit outerwear. Crafted from grey blanket wool in the 1970s, this winter coat features handcrafted embroidery of a polar bear family. Did you know that polar bears actually have black skin?
