While Kashmiri scarves from North India might initially appear quite elaborate, often featuring paisley motifs and richly colored embroidery threads or beadwork, they transform subtly when worn. The patterns become more understated, leaving a distinctive impression of color blocks and fragmented beauty, with intricate details that reward closer inspection. Therefore, we often style our scarves to simulate how they would look when worn, or bundle them into a ball, to help you visualize and reference their appearance.
North Indian Kashmiri scarves (Kani) are generally available in two sizes: small (70x200cm) and large (100x200cm). Please note these are style size indications, not exact measurements, as handmade variations exist between different styles and batches. The smaller size is lightweight and easy to carry, offering a sleek and versatile option for anyone. However, for enhanced warmth and a more voluminous, plush look when wrapped, the larger size is highly recommended. Larger scarves allow for richer, more varied layering techniques and make a bolder statement when worn as a cape, elevating your overall fashion ensemble.
★ A warm scarf accompanying you, whether in your car or at the office, provides protection from the winter wind and summer air conditioning, acting as a practical temperature regulator. It's also an essential travel companion. This unique, handcrafted shawl/scarf not only offers warmth but ensures you are the radiant focal point in every photograph.
Kashmiri wool is a gift from nature, imbued with the artisan's heartfelt craftsmanship.
The gentlest scarf, the warmest blessing.
Choose the most precious and warm gift for yourself and your beloved friends.
Care and Maintenance Notes:
★ Each piece is a unique, handcrafted wool artwork, meticulously made by artisans, ensuring that every item is one-of-a-kind.
★ Handcrafted wool items may exhibit slight irregularities characteristic of handmade work, unlike machine-made items that are perfectly uniform. Minor thread deviations or slight variations in dye color may occur. (If a flaw is significant, clearly visible to the naked eye, and falls outside the scope of minor handmade imperfections, we will document and explain it. If you are particularly sensitive to the nuances of handmade items, please consider your purchase carefully. If you are new to handcrafted textiles, feel free to message us for details about specific pieces.)
★ Please do not machine wash wool products. We recommend dry cleaning once per season. If hand washing is necessary, use a wool-specific detergent or shampoo, gently washing the item separately. (Darker dyed items may experience some color bleeding.) After air-drying, you can iron at a low temperature with a towel placed underneath. (Avoid direct sunlight.)
★ The items we select are of a delicate, artistic quality, especially our cashmere products, which require gentle handling. Fingernails, jewelry, metal zippers on bags and clothing, and Velcro can easily snag the fibers, so please handle with care. While cashmere is light and soft, wool products are generally more resistant to abrasion. We select wool from the first shearing, lamb's wool, or use boiled wool techniques, making them softer and more skin-friendly than regular wool. We personally find them non-irritating, but if you are particularly concerned about itchiness, we will specify it. You are also welcome to message us if you have strong concerns about potential irritation.
★ Each item will be presented in an eco-friendly, minimalist kraft paper box, suitable for gifting to your dearest loved ones.
Xian Nu Xing Selects - North Indian Kashmiri Wool Handcrafted Scarves/Shawls
Boiled Wool Scarves/
Due to the high altitude of the Kashmir plateau, where the boiling point is lower, a unique boiled wool technique has been developed. Through repeated boiling and drying processes, the wool becomes exceptionally fluffy and soft, offering superior skin-friendliness compared to standard wool products. The multi-layered yarn construction provides excellent thickness and wind resistance, complemented by meticulously color-matched hand embroidery. These scarves are detailed and can be worn on both sides (one side features a different color or a lighter shade; the reverse side may show a few hand-tied knots from the embroidery threads. If this is not a concern, both sides can be worn).
Traditional Kani Craftsmanship/
Kani is a classical Indian weaving art (not printing). Traditionally, intricate patterns of vines, flowers, paisley, and maple leaves were handwoven using wooden shuttles, with each piece taking several months to complete. More commonly found today are machine-woven versions, which require time-consuming hand-cutting of threads on the back, leaving weft threads visible. These resemble Impressionist paintings, and some individuals enjoy wearing them on the reverse side.
Hand Embroidery/
The embroidery threads across the entire shawl are meticulously stitched by hand, one needle at a time. While not as perfectly precise or flat as machine embroidery, this technique imparts the unique charm of fine craftsmanship. Abundant details create a beautiful and delicate aesthetic, often featuring vibrant vines or the auspicious paisley motif, symbolizing continuity and royalty, evoking a romantic Bohemian garden ambiance.
