Water-milled cinnabar, Emperor cinnabar, Purple-gold cinnabar, and Crystal cinnabar are all high-content quality cinnabar. Their **main differences lie in color, texture, hardness, and manufacturing methods**.
**"Water-milled Cinnabar"**
A true Chinese red, with a slight orange undertone. The surface has a warm, matte finish that will become more lustrous with wear, developing a patina.
The manufacturing process involves repeatedly grinding fine cinnabar particles into a paste, mixing with water, allowing it to settle, and collecting the upper "turbid liquid." This is then allowed to settle again (the water-milling purification process). The bottom cinnabar mud is air-dried and then pressed using ancient methods. Even on the cross-section, uniform, fine mineral sparkle particles can be seen.
**"Emperor Cinnabar"**
A brighter, true red color with higher hardness.
The manufacturing process involves purifying natural cinnabar ore through multiple steps including **crushing/grinding/magnetic separation/water-milling/high polishing**, followed by ancient pressing methods. Emperor cinnabar has almost no mineral sparkle on the surface, but has it internally. The surface is treated with a **high-polishing** process to achieve a metallic sheen, especially under sunlight, enhancing its metallic luster.
**"Purple-Gold Cinnabar"**
A purplish-red color with slightly lower hardness than Emperor cinnabar.
The manufacturing process involves multiple steps from natural cinnabar ore, including **crushing/grinding/screening**, but **without water-milling purification**. Therefore, the surface is not as fine and has scattered small mineral sparkle particles, giving a "starry sky" effect.
**"Crystal Cinnabar"**
A purplish-red color, translucent.
Large cinnabar crystals are directly chipped from the cinnabar ore. Large crystal particles are clearly visible on the surface. Under light, each particle is transparent, emitting a fluorescent red glow.

> Cinnabar
The earliest documented records refer to cinnabar with a single character, "丹" (dān). "丹" is an ideogrammatic compound character. Ancient miners dug wells, and extracted minerals from within the wells. Thus, the character "丹" is essentially the character "井" (jǐng, well) with a dot in the middle, signifying the extraction of something from a dug mine. This "something" is cinnabar.
Because cinnabar is red, often a deep red, "朱" (zhū) also means red. Later, "丹砂" (dānshā) was called "朱砂" (zhūshā). "丹" and "朱" describe the color, while "砂" describes the shape, referring to irregular granular minerals.
Cinnabar's color is permanent. Chinese calligraphy and painting are called "丹青" (dānqīng), where "丹" refers to cinnabar. An indispensable component of pigments, the "Eight Treasures Seal Paste," also has cinnabar as its main ingredient.
From a Feng Shui perspective, cinnabar is collected from minerals that gather the essence of the sun and moon. It absorbs the positive energy of heaven and earth, thus cinnabar possesses a very strong Yang energy magnetic field. We can observe that jade feels cool to the touch, while cinnabar held in the hand feels warm.
Since ancient times, cinnabar has been used in various Taoist practices such as drawing talismans, consecration rituals, warding off evil, and suppressing malevolent energies. Cinnabar has always been regarded as a supreme item for attracting luck, changing fortunes, suppressing malevolence, dispelling evil, inviting blessings, and accumulating wealth. It carries auspicious meanings of great fortune and prosperity, as well as peace and health.
The "Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing" (Classic of Materia Medica) lists cinnabar as a superior substance, often used in medicinal treatments for calming the spirit, detoxifying, and alleviating insomnia and excessive dreaming.
Living in modern times, owning one or two cinnabar artifacts can also cultivate one's character, nourish the eyes, and soothe the heart.
> Identification
**All cinnabar products in our store are high-content cinnabar with a strong sense of weight. You can use the following methods for identification:**
>. Burning cinnabar will turn it black. (Please heat it indirectly. It is generally not recommended to directly burn finished products as it is difficult to control the time and area. If it turns black after prolonged heating, it cannot be restored.)
>. True cinnabar can draw an orange-red line on paper. (To avoid damaging the aesthetic of the finished product, please choose an inconspicuous area to draw the line, or use the complimentary bead for marking.)
> Maintenance
**If cinnabar jewelry does not have metal or plant-based components (such as wood, bamboo, bodhi seeds, etc.), it can be exposed to water appropriately, but it is not suitable for prolonged soaking, as this will affect its luster.**
**It is not recommended to get the braided cord wet. After cleaning, it should be air-dried before wearing, as wearing damp cords can lead to excessive moisture, which is not beneficial for the body.**
1. Avoid Corrosion
Cinnabar is a mineral and is insoluble in water. However, frequent contact with chemicals such as soap and shower gel can corrode cinnabar.
2. Avoid Contact with Metal Objects
The mineral elements in cinnabar can absorb metal ions, causing irreversible dulling and blackening of the cinnabar.
3. Avoid High Temperatures
The mercuric sulfide component in cinnabar only releases at temperatures of 380 degrees Celsius. Therefore, as long as cinnabar jewelry is kept away from high-temperature environments, it can be worn with peace of mind.
4. Avoid Collisions with Hard or Sharp Objects.
Cinnabar has high hardness but is brittle, so be careful to prevent drops.
5. How to Clean
If you find that the cinnabar is dirty, do not soak it in water, as this will alter its original luster! You can wipe it a few times with a slightly damp cotton cloth, and it will be fine after being left for a while.
6. Oiling for Maintenance
Apply a layer of white tea oil or olive oil to the finished product, allowing the surface to absorb the oil, making it more lustrous and bright. If applying oil, seal it in a brocade box, perhaps wrapped in a layer of plastic wrap to prevent the oil from staining the brocade lining.
7. Frequent Handling
Frequently handle the cinnabar jewelry worn on your body with your hands, allowing a very thin layer of oil to adhere to the surface. Over time, it will become more antique and elegant.
The actual item is more exquisite and beautiful than the photos.
