Like the other four kiwi species, they are covered in fluffy, dense feathers, have a short, stout body, cannot fly, and possess a pointed, slender beak that can be flexibly inserted into the soil to locate insects. Kiwis are monogamous, with pairs maintaining their bond for up to 20 years. Kiwi eggs can weigh up to one-seventh of the female bird's body weight, making it difficult for the female to eat for a week before laying. Introduced species such as cats, dogs, and stoats have disrupted New Zealand's ecological balance and threaten the survival of the kiwi.
