Among the variations in color, the most significant is the "play-of-color" found in opals. Opal, derived from the Latin "opalus," signifies "the collection of all gemstone beauty." It is celebrated for its magical and beautiful play-of-color effect, and is also a symbol of nobility and status. The renowned English playwright Shakespeare once described opal as "this miracle, the queen of gems." Its colors are incredibly diverse, displaying different hues from various angles. Each opal is unique, making it highly collectible. Opals come in various types, including Black Opal, White Opal (Crystal Opal), Fire Opal, and Boulder Opal. Opal is composed of silica spheres, which are too small to be seen with the naked eye and require an electron microscope for observation. These color variations are caused by diffraction and interference – a complex interaction where light plays with the spaces between these microscopic spheres! **Care & Storage** For natural gemstones like opals or pearls, please be mindful to avoid excessively humid environments or drastic temperature changes. Fluctuations in temperature and humidity can accelerate the decomposition or oxidation of organic gemstones. Due to their hardness and formation, it's also advisable to avoid hot springs and hot water baths, as well as products containing cleaning agents. Opal is a delicate gemstone that requires a bit of moisture to maintain its beauty. Therefore, we do not include desiccants in the storage bags. Like other gemstones, it should not be worn during bathing or when visiting hot springs. Avoid using silver polishing cloths on opals; instead, gently clean them with a clean, dry, or slightly damp cloth. We will include a jewelry polishing cloth. After wearing, lightly wipe the ring clean and store it in the provided gemstone pouch. For all natural gemstone and metal jewelry, it is not recommended to wear them while visiting hot springs or bathing, as chemicals can cause adverse reactions. Avoid direct contact with perfumes and bleach. Please also refrain from storing jewelry in bathrooms or kitchens, as this can accelerate oxidation. For sterling silver or gold jewelry, when not in use, try to minimize exposure to moisture and air. Wipe clean with a dry cloth or the provided polishing cloth, then store in a PVC zipper bag. Each piece of jewelry should be stored separately to prevent scratches from collision with other items or hard surfaces. The zipper bags are equipped with imported Japanese desiccants. **Natural Stone Inclusions** The natural stones used in NOW Design are collected from around the world, and each piece is one-of-a-kind, often resulting in a single product. These are specially selected natural stones, and we showcase their colors under different angles and lighting conditions for our clients. Natural stones may contain internal impurities (inclusions), which are unavoidable. If this is a concern, we advise against purchasing. However, NOW's products will always eliminate natural stones with surface impurities that affect the appearance. **Necklace Sizing** We recommend a 16-inch or 18-inch necklace length.
