Nagasaki Sansai Yunomi

Nagayo Sansai originates from China's Tang Sancai. During the 300 years of the Tang Dynasty, a brilliant and gorgeous ceramic beauty once flourished. Through Western culture and Silk Road trade, it evolved into Persian Sancai, and also influenced Japan's Shosoin Sancai. The resplendent and luxurious Sancai pottery has been passed down in Nagayo, Nagasaki Prefecture, and is called the "Phantom Sancai." Nagasaki Sansai is a great traditional work left by our ancestors. Sancai is a type of soft-glazed pottery, fired at high temperatures in an oxidizing atmosphere to create tri-colored patterns. The soft tones of Persian Sancai style, combined with the kiln-change beauty of traditional Nagayo Sansai, create the characteristic features of Nagasaki Sansai with a modern touch. The Watanabe Kiln, which fired Nagayo ware from 1667 to 1859, ceased operations. There are two firing methods for Sancai ware: 1. Soft pottery fired at low temperatures with lead glaze applied to the formed body. 2. Fired twice, first unglazed, then with colored glaze. In the 17th century, Japan traded with the Netherlands, and introduced soft pottery from Vietnam called "Kochi-de," which was favored by tea ceremony enthusiasts (Suki-chajin). It was used as incense containers (kogo) in tea ceremony utensils. Kyoyaki began to imitate and fire Kochi-de soft pottery. The "Kingokukoku Monoyama Daigai Shojocho" records descriptions of the Nagayo-zara mountain. A Champa potter was brought from the Omura domain. Champa refers to a region in Vietnam.
