- Hokkaido is known for its abundance of wild bears, and the Hokkaido Bear Wooden Sculpture vividly imitates a bear fishing scene. These wood carvings date back to the 1920s and were brought back and popularized by Tokugawa Yoshitsune, the head of the Owari Tokugawa family in Hokkaido, during his travels in Europe. These works, once dedicated to the Emperor of Japan, are now receiving renewed attention in the Yakumo region and are even used in fashion merchandise designs.
