Born on December 5, 1959, Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara is known for his eclectic, cartoonish paintings of melancholy children and animals. After graduating from the Aichi Prefectural University of the Arts with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master of Fine Arts, he went to study at the Dusseldorf Academy of Art in the late 1980s, drawing inspiration from Eastern and Western cultures throughout his life. Yoshitomo Nara's childhood coincided with Japan's post-war period (when more people were exposed to Western popular culture, such as comic books, Disney animation, and pop music), and is often seen as an early influence on Yoshitomo's work. Although he has always said that he did not draw from Japanese manga, his distinctive wide-eyed portraits have often prompted art critics to draw parallels between the two. Instead, he insists that by pairing innocent children with cynical expressions or out-of-place objects such as sharp knives, his work elevates to a different spiritual level, reflecting on important issues of religion and philosophy.

Yoshitomo Nara has many loyal supporters. He has held many solo exhibitions around the world, and held important retrospective exhibitions from 2003 to 2005, which toured to many places. Yoshitomo Nara's works are collected by many top art institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Museum of Chicago, and the National Museum of Art in Osaka, Japan.
