The existent population is small, widely distributed in the Central Mountain Range at elevations from 1000 to 3500 meters. The number of Formosan black bears declines sharply in recent decades due to human activity. The Formosan black bear was specified as “endangered” under Taiwan's Wildlife Conservation Act in 1989 and, in 2001, voted the most representative wildlife of Taiwan. Round-headed, short-necked, small-eyed, the species’ dog-like long snout earns it the nickname of ‘‘dog bear.” The bears do not hibernate.
