Ancient Sanskrit texts, such as the Atharvaveda, already document the Lacquer Seed insect, Lacquer Seed itself, and its applications. Records in China dating back to the 3rd century mention Lacquer Seed as an insect product used for dyeing textiles. The process of plant dyeing is quite intricate, involving steps such as fabric scouring, pattern binding/stitching, dye material preparation, boiling the dye liquid, mordanting, simmering, cooling to set the color, rinsing, and more. Typically, two dyeing cycles are required to achieve a sufficiently saturated and beautiful hue before the fabric is finally dehydrated and air-dried. Every step influences the final outcome, which is precisely why plant-dyed items are so unique. This series of products begins with entire fabric pieces being hand-dyed before being cut and sewn. Through a meticulous process of manual tie-dyeing twice, with overlapping colors, the resulting patterns are layered, and the colors exhibit at least three distinct shades. A deeper color signifies more dye absorption, not dirt! Each design is one-of-a-kind, and every pattern is absolutely unique.
