The Indian Sanskrit text, the Atharvaveda, contains descriptions of the lac insect, lac dye, and its uses. China recorded lac dye in the 3rd century, recognizing it as an insect product used for dyeing cotton. Plant dyeing is a complex process: it involves fabric scouring, pattern binding/stitching, dye material preparation, boiling the dye liquid, mordanting, simmering, cooling to set the color, rinsing, and more. Typically, dyeing is done twice to achieve a rich, beautiful saturation. Finally, the fabric is dewatered and air-dried. Each step influences the final outcome, which is why plant-dyed items are so unique. This series of products begins with a whole piece of fabric that is resist-dyed, then cut and sewn. The dyeing process utilizes two rounds of manual resist dyeing, where overlapping colors create layered patterns with at least three distinct tonal variations. Deeper colors indicate more dye absorption, not dirt. Each design is one-of-a-kind, and every pattern is absolutely unique. Please note that plant dyes are sensitive to acids. Avoid contact with any acidic substances.
