Untold numbers of thread crossing under and over each other, an untold number of times, is the untold story throughout time of warmth, texture, and the very beginnings of the artistic craft of woven cloth. This delicately crafted and handmade shawl tells a similar story, a focus on the artistic craftsman who still lives by and depends on this incredibly important skill of civil humanity, a craft that is all but dismissed today by the masses cloaked within the very fabric of this lost art form. This shawl embraces not the roar of industrial production, or the endless bolts of the mass produced fabric of today, but the pure and simple ways of a craftsman, an artesian, and the warmer times of community and family.
Tapestry weaving is the technique used in making this shawl. In Europe and America, it was usually used for texture painting and tapestry. The Chinese used this technique on fancy clothing for nobility. In Hualien, a place full of traditional Taroko cultures, innovative patterns are presently added into traditional shawls. The designs are bold, with varieties of deep colors, layered upon layer, bringing out the rich and magnificent colors of the gods.
The very ancient craft of tapestry weaving involves very time consuming and skilled techniques, and has all but become a lost art form. Being entirely handmade in such ancient techniques is why most of our shawls are considered luxury items of clothing, or outright pieces of collectable art.
As for the tapestry weaving machines of ancient design, used in crafting our shawls, they are like piano strings, levers, and keys, the latter thrown back and forth between the lever activated strings to create the art of tapestry. The different patterns are made between the artistic manipulation of all three components in a seamlessly harmonious rhythm created in the artisan's mind. The art is mathematical in rhythm, once again similar to music, in order to create the endless variations of patterns. Therefore, a totally focused yet peaceful mind is required for this specific art.
