Nagano's Kijiya, who carves bowls from zelkova trees, and Yamanaka's lacquer nushi, who rubs lacquer into wooden vessels using a technique called rubbing lacquer. A bowl created for the beautiful form and ease of use, with the texture of wood and the luster of black lacquer. It is a bowl that I arrived at from scratch through trial and error with two craftsmen. The material is zelkova. It is a tree with beautiful grain and suitable for bowls with a high height as a wood. Keyaki has been loved for a long time in Japan. The features of the shape are the hill closed inside and the sharp form. It is a thin bowl that shows the craftsmanship. Although it is sharp, it fits comfortably in your hand and is easy to use as a soup bowl. The thin wooden bowl is characterized by its lightness and heat insulation. The soup bowl that holds hot soup can be said to be the most useful container for wood. The finish is wiping lacquer. It is a technique of rubbing many times like wiping lacquer. The black lacquer is rubbed on top of each other to create a beautiful finish with subtle shades. The wood grain of zelkova is slightly soft, but the black color tightens the atmosphere. The polite work of the painter gives it a glossy feel. The finish is due to the detailed work of stopping the grain of wood in the process of rubbing the lacquer. As it is lacquered, it is resistant to moisture and can be used every day without hesitation. As long as you avoid the dishwasher, strong rubbing, and soaking and washing, you don't need to handle it delicately. A soup bowl made over a long period of time while visiting the craftsman's workshop many times. As for the shape, I cut the wood to check it, and then cut it a little to adjust the angle. The wiping lacquer was also decided by trying more than 10 patterns by trial and error of color combinations. A soup bowl that has been fully finished.
