Founder Sister Isabel Martin decided the best way to help the poor was to provide jobs, so she founded Creative Handicrafts in 1984 to teach underprivileged women how to make toys, bags and textiles. In addition to providing employment opportunities, vigorous fair trade activities such as sewing instruction and scholarships for children continue to be vigorously pursued. Over the years, many women have taken advantage of the technical training they received. For example, some women started new businesses while others worked at partner companies. In addition, women who did not acquire tailoring skills received culinary training and provided lunch to many office workers in Mumbai as members of the Lunch Box Catering Project.
